Alsohit me up

Definition

Short for "hit me up": an invitation to message or contact the person.

At a glance

  • Simply means 'get in touch' or 'message me'.
  • Common at the end of dating profiles and social posts.
  • Friendly rather than suggestive on its own.
  • The words around it decide the meaning.

In detail

HMU is common at the end of dating profiles ("into hiking and board games, HMU") and in social posts. It simply means "get in touch" and is friendly rather than suggestive on its own.

Context around it matters more than the abbreviation itself: "HMU if you're DTF" and "HMU for trivia night" mean very different things.

In a sentence

  • Into climbing, bad puns and board games. HMU if you want to team up for quiz night.
  • Visiting Lisbon next month, HMU for restaurant tips.

Common questions

Is HMU a sexual term?

No. It just means contact me. It only takes on a suggestive meaning when the surrounding words make that clear.
