Definition

Sexual performance anxiety is worry about how one will perform or be judged during sex, which can itself interfere with arousal and enjoyment.

At a glance

  • Sexual performance anxiety is worry about how one will perform or be judged during sex.
  • Masters and Johnson called the habit of watching and judging oneself spectatoring.
  • The stress can interfere with arousal, creating a cycle.
  • It is very common and is not necessarily a sign of a relationship problem.

In detail

Masters and Johnson described a pattern they called spectatoring, in which a person mentally watches and evaluates themselves instead of being present. The resulting stress activates the body's inhibition system, which can make problems such as erection difficulties or trouble reaching orgasm more likely, creating a cycle.

Performance anxiety is very common and is not a sign of a relationship problem. Approaches that lower pressure, such as sensate focus exercises or agreeing that intimacy need not follow a set goal, often help. If physical symptoms persist, a doctor can check for other causes.

In a sentence

  • I told my partner about my performance anxiety, and just saying it out loud took some pressure off.
  • The leaflet at the clinic said performance anxiety is common and treatable.

Where the word comes from

Masters and Johnson described spectatoring, a key part of performance anxiety, in their 1970 book Human Sexual Inadequacy.
