In detail
Role-play draws on imagination and storytelling. Scenarios may be light and funny or intense, and can explore power, novelty or fantasies that people would never want in reality. Costume, setting and script are all optional.
Because a character may say things the person would not mean, partners agree beforehand which themes are welcome and which are off-limits, and keep an out-of-character safeword. Stepping out of the scene to check in is always allowed, and debriefing afterwards helps separate the fiction from the relationship.
In a sentence
- We wrote down which role-play themes are off-limits before trying anything.
- If either of us steps out of character, we just say pause and talk.
Common questions
Does enjoying a role-play fantasy mean wanting it in real life?
No. Many people enjoy exploring scenarios in a safe, agreed setting that they would never want in reality. A fantasy is not a wish.
Why is an out-of-character safeword useful?
Characters may say things the people playing them do not mean. A safeword that sits outside the story makes it clear when someone genuinely wants to pause or stop.
