How do I tell my partner I am asexual?

Short answer

Choose a calm moment, explain what asexual means for you in particular, and make clear what has not changed, such as your care for them. Then talk openly about needs on both sides. Asexuality is a spectrum, so describing your own experience matters more than the label.

Start with what it means to you

Asexual people experience little or no sexual attraction, but the word covers a wide spectrum. Some asexual people never want sex, some are open to it in certain contexts, and some experience attraction only rarely or only after a deep emotional bond. Many want romance and committed relationships, and some do not.

Because of that range, your partner will understand you best if you describe your own experience rather than relying on the label alone. It may help to write down a few points beforehand.

Reassure and stay honest

A partner may worry that this means you do not love them, or that they did something wrong. If that is not true, say so clearly: being asexual is about how attraction works for you, not a judgement on them.

Be honest, too, about what you want going forward. You might want to keep some forms of intimacy, change others, or need time to think. It is fine not to have every answer in the first conversation.

Working out a shared path

Many couples where one partner is asexual build relationships that work for both, through open conversations about touch, affection and sex, and sometimes through different relationship structures. A difference in desire is a common challenge that couples face with patience and good communication.

Your boundaries and theirs both count, and neither of you should feel pressured. A couples therapist who is knowledgeable about asexuality can help, and ace community spaces offer advice from people who have had the same conversation.
