Definition

An umbrella word for consensual sexual or relational interests and practices that fall outside what a given culture treats as conventional.

At a glance

  • Kink is an informal umbrella word, not a single activity or identity.
  • What counts as kink shifts with culture and era; some once-unusual interests are now fairly mainstream.
  • Many adults have kink-related fantasies, though fewer act on them.
  • Consent, negotiation and the right to stop at any time are what separate kink from harm.
  • On a dating profile, 'kink-friendly' signals openness to a conversation, not agreement to anything specific.

In detail

Kink is a broad, informal label. It can cover power dynamics, role-play, restraint, particular sensations, specific objects or settings, and much more. What counts as kink depends on culture and era: some interests once considered unusual are now fairly mainstream. Surveys suggest that a large share of adults have at least some interest in kink-related fantasies, even if relatively few act on them.

What separates kink from harm is consent. Kink communities emphasise negotiation before anything happens, agreed limits, safewords, the right to stop at any time, and care afterwards. On a dating profile, 'kinky' or 'kink-friendly' usually signals openness to these conversations, not agreement to any particular activity.

In a sentence

  • My profile says kink-friendly, which just means I'm happy to talk about it if we get to know each other.
  • She said kink is a small part of her life, and that boundaries and consent come first for her.

Where the word comes from

'Kink' originally meant a twist or bend in a rope or thread. 'Kinky' came to mean eccentric or unconventional, and during the 20th century it took on its sense of unconventional sexual interests; 'kink' as a noun for those interests became common later.

Not to be confused with

  • Paraphilia

Paraphilia is a clinical term; a kink interest is not a disorder unless it causes significant distress or involves non-consenting people.

Common questions

Is having a kink normal?

Interest in kink is common, and between consenting adults it is part of ordinary human variety. Research has not found people who practise kink to be less psychologically healthy than others. What matters is consent, communication and everyone's wellbeing.

What is the difference between kink and abuse?

Kink is agreed in advance, has limits both people chose, includes a way to stop at any moment and leaves both people free to walk away. Abuse ignores consent, punishes refusal or controls someone outside anything they agreed to, whatever words are used to describe it.
